Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth Programs
The Program
On January 2, 2002, Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth launched the nationally acclaimed Project Safe Place in Southern Nevada. Project Safe Place provides access to immediate help and supportive resources for young people in crisis through a network of sites sustained by qualified agencies, trained volunteers, and businesses.
Through a partnership with Terrible Herbst Gaming, the program is available 24-hours a day to any youth in crisis at all Terrible Herbst convenience stores in Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Henderson, Mesquite, Laughlin, Searchlight, and Pahrump, Nevada. Staff members at all of these locations have gone through training to work with youth in crisis.
In addition, all Citizens Area Transit buses act as mobile Safe Place sites, transporting any youth in crisis to the nearest Terrible Herbst convenience store for free. All three Joe's Crabshack restaurants in the Vegas Valley are also Safe Place locations. The program is also accessible through our toll-free hotline, 1-866-U-ARE-SAFE.
Once a youth accesses a Safe Place site, he or she is moved to a secure location and given a snack while a staff member calls our homeless youth Mobile Crisis Intervention Team (MCIT). Within 20 minutes, a licensed professional from the MCIT arrives on the scene to assess the youth in crisis, provide basic medical care if necessary, and transport the youth to an appropriate alternative location (shelter, drug rehabilitation facility, a relative’s house, etc.).
